Hip replacement surgery removes damaged bone and cartilage from your hip joint and replaces them with prosthetic components. Our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques and MAKO robot-assisted technology for improved precision and faster recovery.

Knee replacement surgery can help relieve pain and restore function in severely diseased knee joints. Our orthopaedic team specialises in both total and partial knee replacements using the latest surgical techniques.

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat a variety of shoulder conditions including rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement, and frozen shoulder.

ACL reconstruction surgery rebuilds the torn ligament using a tissue graft. This arthroscopic procedure helps restore knee stability and allows you to return to your normal activities and sports.

Hallux valgus (bunion) correction surgery realigns the bones of your big toe to relieve pain and restore normal function. We offer several surgical techniques depending on the severity of your condition.

A discectomy removes the damaged portion of a herniated disc in your spine that's pressing on a nerve. This procedure relieves pain, numbness, and weakness caused by the compressed nerve.

Treatment in days, not months

NHS waiting times for non-urgent, consultant-led orthopaedic treatment regularly exceed the 18 week target, with some patients waiting over a year for procedures such as hip and knee replacements.

At Helios, the process is significantly faster. Once we have reviewed your medical records and any relevant imaging, you will receive a personalised treatment proposal within 72 hours. From there, most patients have their procedure scheduled within two weeks, depending on the complexity of the case.

There is no lengthy referral pathway and no uncertainty. You will know your diagnosis, your options, and your treatment date upfront.

Why receive medical care in Germany?

Private patient room at Helios Hospital

Shorter waiting times for elective surgery

German hospitals do not face the same capacity constraints as the NHS, which means significantly shorter waits for orthopaedic procedures. Most patients at Helios have their surgery scheduled within two weeks of their initial enquiry.

Helios Lounge - Patient care corridor

Consultant led care from start to finish

In Germany, patients typically remain under the care of the same consultant throughout their treatment, rather than being passed between departments. Your orthopaedic surgeon will oversee everything from your initial assessment through to discharge.

Rehabilitation gym with modern equipment

Well resourced, modern hospitals

German hospitals generally have higher staffing levels and more up-to-date facilities than their NHS equivalents. Helios Hospital Krefeld offers private rooms, dedicated orthopaedic wards, and an on-site rehabilitation centre within the Ortho-Campus.

Surgeons with robotic surgery equipment

Access to advanced surgical techniques

Germany has a higher concentration of diagnostic equipment and surgical technology per capita than the UK. Our orthopaedic team routinely uses robot-assisted systems and minimally invasive approaches where clinically appropriate.

Patient rehabilitation therapy

More involvement in your own care

German healthcare places greater emphasis on patient choice and shared decision-making. Your consultant will explain all available treatment options and work with you to agree a plan suited to your individual circumstances.

Patient stories

Due to a congenital hip dysplasia, arthrosis developed in my right hip joint. In my early 40s, I felt far too young for an artificial joint. However, I was able to do less and less, and I had to give up playing football completely. Then Prof. Kraft operated on me using the MAKO robot. I was absolutely amazed: after just a few days, I was able to walk without crutches, and the pain is gone.

Marcel

In the morning I was still lying on the operating table, and in the evening I was already able to go to the toilet with the help of a nurse. It was simply incredible how quickly I was able to stand on my own legs again. I immediately felt that the pain I had had for years before was gone. As for the other pains I felt after the surgery, I knew they were only temporary.

Barbara

Already about three months after surgery, I was walking up and down the stairs in the home office. Being able to move completely pain-free, all day long, is an incredibly nice feeling.
